This photography tour, under my guidance, takes you through the biggest highlights and some hidden gems along the South Coast, from Reykjavík to Stokksnes in the East. In addition to the frosted cliffs, impressive waterfalls shrouded in mist, and black sand beaches, you will also have a chance to explore a few extraordinary gems. You pay an extended visit to the unique crystal blue ice caves in Vatnajökull. Jökulsárlón with its luminous-blue icebergs floating in the glacier lagoon is on your way too. So does Þórsmörk, where you need to ford the glacier rivers and rough terrains on the exciting way to this isolated nature reserve. Join me, you will not be disappointed.

Day 1 – 22/11 – Arrival in Iceland

Arrival at Keflavík International Airport. We take care of your transfer from the airport to your hotel in Reykjavík. In the evening we meet up and get to know each other whilst having a new welcome dinner. Afterwards we will discuss the upcoming tour.

Day 2 - 23/11 - Towards the East

On this first day of the winter photography tour we follow the Ring Road towards Vík í Mýrdal. Along the way we stop at various photography locations that are best suited in combination with the weather conditions for that day. Because we are returning along the same route, we will stop at the locations we skipped on either day 4 and/or day 6 of the tour. We stop at the most beautiful locations along the route and some of the lesser known places like Urriðafoss, Gljúfrabúi and Kvernufoss. We try to get as much out of our day as possible before we head towards our overnight stay in the area of Kirkjubæjarklaustur.

Depending on the weather and solar conditions, we will try to photograph the Northern Lights during the night.

Day 3 - 24/11 - Visiting the crystal blue caves

Today’s focus of attention is Vatnajökull glacier and its crystal blue ice. In the morning we meet up with an experienced ice cave guide who will take us to one or more ice caves in the Vatnajökull glacier. These crystal blue ice caves are sometimes difficult to reach but once you are there, they are a reward by themselves. The surreal colours and beauty of the ice makes this a must-visit for any photographer visiting Iceland. After visiting the ice cave(s), we will try to capture the last light at the ice lagoon, Jökulsárlón, before we head to our destination for the day in the area of Smyrlabjörg.

Depending on the weather and solar conditions, we will try to photograph the Northern Lights during the night.

Day 4 - 25/11 - Exploring the Vatnajökull area

Today is the last in the area of Vatnajökull glacier. The start of this day takes us all the way east to the Vestrahorn mountain at Stokksnes. At Stokksnes you will have the chance to capture the black sand beach in combination with one of Iceland’s most picturesque mountains. Afterwards we drive again to the west with stops in the Skaftafell area and Svínafelljökull glacier. We end the day by capturing the sunset colours at the Jökulsárlón and Fjallsárlón ice lagoons, as well as the famous Diamond Beach. Our overnight stay for the day will also be in the area of Smyrlabjörg.

Depending on the weather and solar conditions, we will try to photograph the Northern Lights during the night.

Day 5 - 26/11 - To the valley

Today we shift our focus again to the west. During this day we make various stops at the locations we had to skip on the first day, like for example the Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon near Kirkjubæjarklaustur. Instead of driving back in the direction of Reykjavík, we take a right turn at the Seljalandsfoss waterfall. This F-road takes us into the Þórsmörk valley. This hidden gem is located on the north side of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano, which erupted in 2010. The remote locations of Þórsmörk has a lot of photo opportunities because of its desolate landscapes and unspoiled nature. And who knows, you might even encounter a few curious arctic foxes. Overnight stay at the Volcano Huts in Húsadalur.

Depending on the weather and solar conditions, we will try to photograph the Northern Lights during the night.

Day 6 - 27/11 - Exploring Thor's hidden gem

Today we will explore the area of Þórsmörk better. If everything is covered in snow, we will get the opportunity of hiking on snowshoes. Þórsmörk has one of Iceland’s most dynamic and beautiful landscapes, where active volcanoes and glaciers tower above the valley below. During this time the valley does not get any direct sunlight which gives us the change to capture the soft indirect light a lot better. When we return to the Volcano Huts you will have the chance to utilise the sauna or enjoy the quietness of the area with a cup of coffee. In the evening we will go through some of your favourite shots captured on this tour. Overnight stay at the Volcano Huts.

Depending on the weather and solar conditions, we will try to photograph the Northern Lights during the night.

Day 7 - 28/11 - Return to Reykjavík

On our last day we travel to some lesser frequented locations during winter. We make stops at Þjófafoss, Hjálparfoss and Faxafoss. If the conditions allow it, we will also try to reach Háifoss – one of Iceland’s highest waterfalls. Afterwards we head back to Reykjavík and meet up for a goodbye dinner – the perfect way to finish the tour and exchanged our experiences.
